SchoolSpotlight 77NewBern2 0512 300x222 School Spotlight – School #77 New Bern, NCThis month we will be celebrating the work being done by Childcare Network #77 in New Bern, North Carolina. Their newest building came off of a temporary license and went straight to a five-star license; the highest rating possible in the state of North Carolina. The new building was originally a laundry mat and was converted to an early learning environment in May 2011. The renovation took nearly three months, but was worth it. The school is now almost at maximum capacity!

Fayette MS2 0512 150x150 Fayetteville Schools Raise Awareness for Multiple SclerosisJorge Rivera Jr. is a School Age teacher at Childcare Network #109 in Fayetteville, North Carolina. His Mother Lizel Rivera has Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic autoimmune disorder that happens when a person’s immune system, which normally protects the body, attacks and destroys the body’s healthy tissue. Multiple Sclerosis attacks the central nervous system (CNS) – the brain, spinal cord, and nerve fibers to the eyes. The disorder attacks the covering that surrounds and protects the body’s nerve fibers. When this covering is damaged or destroyed, nerve impulses are interrupted and creates Multiple Sclerosis symptoms.

The warm, windy weather is perfect for kite flying. Right now is great time to have some educational fun with your kids.  Start by discussing the sounds in the word “kite.”  Focus on the hard “k” and hard “t.”  Let your child practice making those sounds and identifying other words with those sounds.  Then, go on an indoor or outdoor scavenger hunt for other items that have the same sounds.  You can also find some really cute sound poems online.  These same activities work for the long “i” sound.
